Routine Maintenance
Did you realise that computer needs regular maintenance in order to keep operating at their best? Old unneeded files and temporary files build up on your hard drive, adding and removing software and data leaves behind a messy hard drive that will slow down the speed in which your data can be read, spyware can build up. All these factors reduce the efficiency of your computer – which means you don’t get the performance you expect.
We recommend you have a PC Healthcheck at least once a year.
A complete software and hardware diagnostic to identify problem areas.
Full Hard Drive check and scan.
Installation of Windows updates and security patches.
A full virus and spyware scan and clean.
Advice on any required upgrades.
Much more.
What can go wrong over time with your computer?
Have you ever looked inside your computer? Probably not, and who can blame you? You would be surprised at the amount of dust that can build up inside the computer. Over time, this build-up can have a detrimental effect on the way it works. The dust can cause cooling fans to clog, which causes less effective airflow and consequent overheating. It can also cause bad connectivity between your motherboard and add-on cards as well as memory etc. SP Web Connections will clear out as much of this dust build-up as possible.
Dust is only one of the problems that can build-up over time. As you use your computer, on your hard-drive, there is a build-up of miscellaneous files which together with data file fragmentation causes a decrease in performance. Compare this to your car. You know that you should keep your car properly serviced to ensure that it keeps running smoothly and to ensure that it does not let you down. Your home computer is just the same as your car – it needs regular servicing in order for it to run efficiently. If it doesn’t get regular servicing then eventually it will starts to slow down and sooner or later it will stop.
So how can you tell that your computer needs to be serviced?
Symptoms are likely to be - running more slowly, unusual pop-up windows start to appear or maybe you find that you get taken to undesirable websites that you were not expecting. Perhaps your computer stops without warning.
Any of these occurrences are indications that something is wrong and that your computer could need a service.
You could of course service your computer yourself, but if you are not that technically skilled, it may be easier (and a lot cheaper in the long run) to get us to work with you to clean up your computer for you.
Help us to help you with your PC problems
Almost every computer will over time develop problems that simple troubleshooting cannot solve and it is time for more extensive repairs. These repairs can often come with headaches and frustrations because the nature of the fault is not always obvious.. It could be the hardware or the software or the operating system. Before you phone us for help it is very useful to us if you can have available as much of the following information as possible. However, don't worry if you are unable to find out this information.
Did your PC display an error message and if so, what did it say?
Under what circumstances does the problem occur? Perhaps when you turn the computer on or off? Or is it when you are using a particular program (for example, word processing, spreadsheet, game, desktop publishing, digital photography, etc.)? Is it when you are using a particular item such as the modem or the printer?
Did you have more than one program running when problem occurred? What were the programs?
Did you recently install software, hardware, or both and if so, what?
Is the problem reproducible? Can you make the problem happen again? If so, what are the steps?
How much memory does your computer have (256MB, 512MB, 1024MB) and what type is it (DDR, DDR2)?
What size is the hard disk and how much space is available?
What is the processor (Pentium, Celeron, K6, Athlon, Athlon 64) and what is it's speed (2400, 3.2GHz)?
What operating system does it use (Windows 98, Windows 2000, XP, Vista etc.)?
What is the model number and/or serial/identification number of the suspect hardware or software?
What is the version of the software? (Look at the "about" option under Help on the program's toolbar)
If hardware or software is believed to be the cause of the problem, when did you purchase it?
Tips To Try Before You Call
Before calling us, try these tips. (They sometimes work and may save you money.)
Turn the computer off, wait a couple of minutes (take a coffee break), then turn it back on.
Check the cables (both ends) to make sure that none have come loose.
Check that the power is turned on.
Update (if you can) and run your antivirus program. (You do have an antivirus program or service, don't you?)
